Twitter VS Nigerian Govt: European Union and United States condemn Nigeria's Twitter ban

Now a day after the nigerian government suspended twitter telecom operators in the african nations say that they have restricted access to the social media platform however the us and the european union have voiced concerns over nigeria's decision to indefinitely ban twitter after the social media giant deleted tweet from the president's account for violating its rules diplomatic missions of the us eu britain canada and ireland issued a joint statement condemning the ban said and i quote banning systems of expression is not the answer the path to more secure nigeria lies in more not less communication unquote now joining the chorus international human rights groups have also condemned the ban however many telecom organizations have come forward to announce the move and they have confirmed its members had received formal instructions from the nigerian communications commission to suspend access to twitter but the announcement did not debar users from using social media giant many users could still access twitter by simply using vpns to maintain access to the platform vpn app has been the second most searched trend on google in nigeria it is a virtual private network that can enable twitter users to bypass the ban nigerian authorities however warned that it would prosecute violators abu bakr malami attorney general of the federation of minister and minister of justice sent out a warning he has directed for immediate prosecution of offenders of the federal government ban on twitter operations in nigeria many nigerians however were outraged by the move uh there will be there will be a lot of chaos there will be backwardness because so many of us use it as a as a medium of getting information hence most of the politicians are founded we go to get information from them sometimes we may not be privileged to buy newspaper or news magazine but when we go there we get genuine information so i think it will affect us badly in that way i think it would be mistaken if people were to narrow it down to a president being irritated that one of his tweet posts was taken down i think it is much more linked to a systematic attempt by the authorities to limit people's access to information to control what kind of information people receive and also to determine who has a right to share information they consider sensitive or criticism to their government it all began when earlier this week twitter removed one of president muhammadu buhari's posts for violating its rules in the tweet now deleted buhari invoked the civil war and promised a response to the wave of attacks by rebels the civil war in nigeria from 1967 to 1970 had left over a million people dead as per agencies the president's account was also suspended for nearly 12 hours now international human rights groups have already condemned the move while the nigerian government justifies the ban by saying that the platform was being used for and i quote activities capable of undermining nigeria's corporate existence unquote details of the suspension remain uncertain information minister lai mohammed did not spell out what form the suspension would take or give more details on the undermining activities ironically his ministry also announced twitter suspension on twitter now twitter has reacted to the suspension it says that the government's decision is deeply concerning and that they are investigating the incidents at present more than 39 million nigerians have a twitter account.
