Pakistan bans TikTok for 3rd time in 9 months

Pakistan has banned tik tok for the  third time  authorities say the app was spreading  immorality and vulgarity  but the real reason behind pakistan's  decision may be slightly different after  all  islamabad won't just bar a chinese app  for indecent content right  let's try to understand what's happening  here first the facts of the case on  monday the sinha court ordered the temporary suspension of tick tock  it directed the pakistan  telecommunication authority or pta  to remove all the app from all its  servers  this order was issued on the petition of a pakistani citizen who said that  tick-tock was spreading obscenity  what sort of obscenity in his complaint  the petitioner argued  that the app was promoting crime several users were uploading videos of themselves consuming drugs and firing weapons or  recording endeavors  like an attempted suicide  the petitioner requested that the app be  partially shut down   so that the government can set up a  mechanism to censor the content  the court has accepted the plea the next  date of hearing is the 8th of july  but this is not the first time that such  a decision has been taken  in october 2020 the pakistan telecom authority banned tiktok for the first  time that's after complaints of indecent and  anti-islamic content  but the ban was lifted within 10 days  then in march this year the peshawar  high court ordered the suspension of  tiktok for the same reasons  the suspension was lifted with a warning  that all  immoral content will be banned  so why can't pakistan just make up its  mind if tick tock really is spreading immoral and anti-islamic content why not  ban it all together  forever why this constant back and forth  of banning  unbanning and then banning again well we  can think of several reasons  explanations the first one is simple  tik tok is a chinese app and pakistan is  almost a chinese colony islamabad and  beijing consider themselves iron  brothers  the prospect of the more dependent  brother banning the more powerful  brothers favorite toy sounds a bit  audacious  so the pakistani establishment keeps  placing tick tock under temporary  suspensions sending the message without offending china  the second explanation is slightly more  complex  you see the morality argument that  pakistan keeps bringing up  is used to mask a desire to ban free  speech  it's true that tick-tock is home to  out-of-line content yes  but it's also home to unfiltered truth  about the establishment  a lot of political content floats on tik  tok in pakistan and most of it is  critical of the government  many users have started using this  platform for dissent  to voice their frustration against their  prime minister  in august last year a tick tocker who  made videos against imran khan was  arrested by the punjab police and  thrashed in broad daylight  daylight watch this  then in may this year around 8 million tech talk videos were blocked in  pakistan some of them  did indeed have objectionable content but there were also videos criticizing  the prime minister they were all removed on the pretext of immorality and now another ban has been imposed the  fact is the iran khan government is in a  fix  it's a catch-22 situation it doesn't  know what to do it cannot ban tick-tock  and offend china  and it cannot let tick tock become a  platform to slam the government  so it hides behind the facade of  immorality and indecency.
