Geneva gears up for Putin-Biden summit

Geneva as president joe biden and his  russian counterpart vladimir putin are  said to meet in a few hours from now  both the u.s and kremlin have warned not  to expect  any major breakthrough but both biden  and putin however have expressed hope  that the meeting will bring about stable  relationships  with each other as a report  u.s president joe biden flew to geneva  on tuesday where he will for the first  time since taking office  meet face to face with russian president  vladimir putin  this meeting of rivals comes as  relations between washington and moscow  are at their most  fraught in years but both leaders say  they hope the summit at a swiss villa  can lead to a stable and predictable  relationship between the two powers  in brussels ahead of the sit-down biden  laid out his approach to the russian  leader i'm going to make clear to  president putin  that there are areas where we can't  cooperate  if he chooses in an interview with nbc  news  putin held out the possibility the two  nations could find areas of agreement  we have a bilateral relationship that  has deteriorated to what is the lowest  point in recent years  however there are still matters that  need a certain amount of note comparing  identification and determination of  mutual positions  so that issues of mutual interest can be  solved more  effectively to the benefit of both the  united states and  russia despite cautious  optimism expectations for a major  breakthrough are low  i'm not looking for conflict with russia  but that we will respond  if russia continues its harmful  activities the u.s blames russia for  election interference and cyber attacks  on american businesses  the white house accuses the kremlin of  military intervention in ukraine  where russian-backed separatists battle  forces loyal to american allies in kiev  and biden has criticized putin for  allegedly poisoning and then  jailing the russian dissident alexei  navalmi  russia adamantly denies these  accusations and putin shrugged them off  we know it all well we have been accused  of all kinds of things  election interference cyber attacks and  so on  and not even once did they bother to  produce any kind of evidence  just baseless accusations  the acrimony between the sides isn't new  the two men met a decade ago when biden  was vice president and putin was prime  minister  and both men belie a begrudging respect  for one another  putin compared to biden with his  predecessor  president biden of course is radically  different from trump because he is a  professional  he has spent virtually his entire  adulthood in politics  he's been doing it for  [Music]  and years offered this about his russian  counterpart he's bright  he's tough and uh i have found that uh  he is a uh as they say when he used to  play ball a worthy adversary  joining us on this broadcast now is uh  beyond correspondent nick harper who  joins us  for more on this nick welcome to beyond  you're joining us  from washington all our viewers around  the world need to know what breakthrough  can be expected in this meeting  nick because the ties have been at a  historic low but  there appears to be a mutual um  admiration between biden and putin but  can we expect any breakthrough  yeah mutual admiration i think going  into this both sides have said  positive things about the other but  there are incredibly low  expectations about this meeting we are  not expecting  any big breakthrough as one u.s official  put it a little bit earlier  they said we're not expecting a big set  of deliverables  out of this meeting now there are a huge  number of areas that these two men  simply do not agree on but there is a  small set of issues  that they could find some common ground  is that is what the hope  is that they may be able to come out of  this meeting uh being able to find some  consensus on a couple of issues  potentially nuclear weapons and the  non-proliferation  of those they may be able to find some  common ground on that  going forward they may also be able to  find some common ground on  china now the us joe biden views china  as america's  biggest adversary and there may be some  hope  some suggestion from the u.s president  that vladimir putin perhaps tries to put  a little bit of distance between  russia and china allowing for the two  countries not to come so closely  together and they may just be looking  for a  opportunity to have some stability in  the relationship in many ways it's  amazing that these two men  are even meeting but i think it does  show it does suggest  that both countries are eager to have  some sort of way forward that does not  escalate  the situation in what is already a very  rocky relationship joe biden as we heard  in that clip just a moment ago  saying that he doesn't seek conflict  with russia they want to be able to have  a meeting  where there is in many ways a cooling of  relations and they are able to put in  place  a more predictable future relationship  framework between the two countries  nick the meeting takes place on the back  of biden's first international trip  since becoming  president he attended the g7 meeting the  nato summit  put us firmly in the center of the world  power game once again  but this meeting takes place in geneva  switzerland historically a neutral  country what can we expect today on the  ground in geneva we know  there's tight security cover but what's  the agenda for the day today  yeah there's certainly lots of security  being put in place very interesting that  they have chosen that  neutral ground historically during world  war ii it was the neutral  country but we are expected to see  confrontation between these two men  we're told that there will be  two meetings in total the first one a  bilateral meeting between the two men  the latter one an extended bilateral  meeting so that would be an opportunity  to have  foreign ministers in the meeting  included  with the two leaders as well we're told  that the meetings in total will probably  last about  five hours and at the end of which the  us president joe biden has said that he  will be holding  a solo press conference an ability to  speak to reporters about what went on  during those meetings  it'll be interesting to see how candid  he is and what sort of noises he's  making  about whether or not this was a  successful and positive meeting  and whether there was any constructive  plans that came out of it  but it is very significant that this  comes off the back of like you say a  very busy travel week for him  off the back of the g7 meeting the nato  meetings the european union meetings  he comes with some incredible optics  showing that he has  a whole array of coalition allies  at his back wanting to push back against  russia those are the statements that  we've been hearing out of those meetings  so he comes into this certainly from a  position of strength having met  those allied countries and all of them  saying that they are ready  to push back against moscow nikhapa.
